Teams from OntarioTech University, Lakeridge Health and Durham Region Health Department, under the leadership of Dr Jennifer Abbass Dick, have partnered to create a new About Breastfeeding website providing detailed information about breastfeeding and resources to help breastfeeding/chestfeeding parents give their baby the best start possible.
While the website provides basic information about breastfeeding, and is not designed to be used in place of medical advice from a health care professional or care from a lactation consultant, it is hoped that it will give parents of infants, and prospective parents, a clearer understanding of the value and process of chestfeeding/breastfeeding. Also note that the website exclusively uses the terms “mother” and “breastfeeding” exclusively, but acknowledges that these terms might not be the right fit for everyone.
A short survey is available on the website and it is hoped that the information provided can be further fine-tuned for users by learning about the experience users have in using the website.
The first section on the website explores the value of breastfeeding for both lactating parent and child.
The second section explores in detail the process of breastfeeding:
Learn more about the lactating breast, including how it responds to the baby to make milk.
Learn how to breastfeed - how to watch for the baby’s hunger cues and how to establish an effective latch.
Find out more about different breastfeeding positions and how to help one’s body make more milk, how to express breastmilk, and how to get the best possible start with breastfeeding.
Three more sections look in detail at:
