On April 11th at 10 am PST, UBC Learning Circle will be hosting a free online webinar on Children’s Health and Wellbeing Assessment: A strengths-based app to measure FNIM children’s well-being with Dr. Nancy Young and Mia Bourque.

The presentation will focus on the Aaniish Naa Gegii: the Children’s Health and Well-being Measure© (ACHWM), a strengths-based and culturally relevant app developed to measure the health and well-being of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) children. It will delve into the application of the ACHWM as a culturally safe assessment tool to gather local data to inform community-based decisions.

The presenters are Dr. Nancy Young and Mia Bourque.

Dr. Nancy Young is a clinical epidemiologist with expertise in measurement science. She is currently a Senior Scientist at the CHEO Research Institute and Professor at the University of Ottawa. Her research career has focused on developing self-reported health measures for use by children that give children a voice when it comes to their health. Dr. Young has spent the last 14 years of her career focusing on promoting wellness among First Nations, Inuit and Métis children and youth.

Mia Bourque, B.A., M.A. candidate, is an Anishinaabe-kwe woman currently living in Sudbury. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Laurentian University in 2017, with a Major in Indigenous Studies. She is currently a candidate for the Masters of Indigenous Relations at Laurentian University (her research being on story collecting from her ancestors as data collection), as well as a Part-Time Faculty member at Cambrian College teaching Indigenous studies. In her spare time, she loves to get out on the land (or water) as much as she can to hunt and fish.

The UBC Learning Circle specifically notes that everyone is welcome to their UBCLC sessions. Their events aim to embody a safe space for everyone of all different backgrounds to have their opinions and voices equally heard.
