Being Trauma Aware is offering a free training course designed for workers in child serving organizations or those who interact in a formal way with children and youth exposed to maltreatment or other adverse experiences.

Being Trauma Aware is a free e-learning course designed “to equip and empower participants to approach interactions within their organizations compassionately and to be curious about any trauma that may be affecting current behaviour. From there, the course outlines the path to resilience through tangible steps and best practices.”

The course was developed in recognition that “childhood maltreatment has a significant and a wide-ranging impact on physical, mental and emotional health and is a consistent risk factor for early onset of substance use in adolescence. But thankfully, resilience after trauma is a positive and adaptive response anyone can cultivate if given the right environment, information and support.”

The course is divided into five modules. It can be completed in as little as three hours and can be paused and resumed as needed. It is designed to allow students to stop and save progress as you go, so students can take breaks as needed in their study path. Progress is saved to the student’s account, and once the course has been completed, students will have virtual access indefinitely to the course resources.

The learning goal is that, upon completion of the course, the student will have an understanding of trauma, how common it is, its various effects on the developing brain, behavioural signs of maltreatment, and what to do when one is responsible for a youth whom one suspects is experiencing/has experienced trauma.
