Kelty Mental Health: Newcomer Mental Health Support Resource List

The list, developed in partnership with the BC Children’s Mental Health Program, is intended to be a starting point to learn about anxiety. It includes websites, online tools, guides, books and provincial support services. The Kelty Centre also offers a wide range of resources through their resource library.

Resources on the list with particular relevance to families with young children include:

  • Video: Families, Together: Supporting the Mental Well-being of Children and Youth (BC Children’s Hospital): Video and discussion guide featuring families from different cultural backgrounds and health professionals sharing their experiences support a child or youth with a mental health challenge.

  • Video: Part 1: Where Can Families Start? Supporting Children & Youth with Mental Health Challenges BC Children’s Hospital): This video describes British Columbia’s mental health system and four different professionals families can connect with if they are concerned about their child or youth’s mental health.

  • Video: Part 2: What can Families expect Along the Way? Supporting Children & Youth with Mental Health Challenges (BC Children’s Hospital): This video describes what families can expect when they meet with a health professional about their child’s mental health for the first time, and how to prepare themselves and their child for that first meeting.

  • Website: Anxiety Canada: Provides information on anxiety and OCD, including self-help toolkits, personal stories, and videos.

  • Website: BC Government Early Psychosis Intervention: The Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) Program website promotes early detection, educates about psychosis and provides direction for seeking help. This website has toolkits and information sheets in multiple languages.

  • Support Service: FamilySmart: FamilySmart (trademarked) Parents and Youth in Residence provide peer support, mentoring, system navigation assistance and access to information to families with children and youth with mental health and/or substance use challenges. As well, there are monthly educational visits.

  • Support Service: BC Children’s Hospital – Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre: This service provides:

    • Information and resources on a wide range of mental health and substance use challenges affecting children and youth

    • Peer support provided by FamilySmart® Parents-in-Residence and Youth-in-Residence

    • Help navigating the mental health system

    • Resources and peer support for individuals of any age with an eating disorder or a disordered eating concern

    • Options for support and treatment in BC

    • Free education events and podcast series for parents, as well as school and health professionals • Tips for self-help and prevention
